Mad River Taste Place at Pitcher Inn
Here at the Pitcher Inn, we’re lucky to call home such a vibrant and diverse food-shed as the Mad River Valley—and you, as our guest, should count yourself lucky, too!
From farmers and foragers to cheesemakers, brewers, and distillers, our one-of-a-kind corner of the Green Mountain State produces some delicious stuff. And for an unbeatable overview of that local flavor profile, you’ll want to swing by the Mad River Taste Place in Waitsfield: a mere 10 miles away from our historic Relais & Châteaux hotel.
The Mad River Taste Place: Survey the Mad River Valley Culinary Landscape
The Mad River Taste Place is a shop, tasting gallery, and educational center run under the umbrella of Mad River Taste, a marketing outfit dedicated to spotlighting food-growers and food-makers in our gorgeous neck of the woods. Here at The Pitcher Inn, we collaborate with the Mad River Taste Place on a regular basis and genuinely value its mission.
Here you’ll find a mouthwatering array of local products supplied by better than 50 Mad River Valley producers and food artisans. We’re talking locally made cheese, charcuterie, butter, chocolate, sourdough bread, craft beer, wine, hard cider, spirits, and more. A smorgasbord, in other words, much of it distilling the “terroir” of the Mad River Valley to its delicious essence.
Besides dining at the Mad River Taste Place or procuring some truly top-grade picnic provisions, you can also meet some of the players in the valley’s food-making scene at special tastings and get some hands-on experience in the culinary arts courtesy of the center’s workshops. It’s a multifaceted hub of Mad River Valley food and drink, and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate place in the deepest sense.
Mad River Taste Week 2018
Coming up in August, meanwhile, you’ll have an extended epicurean party to enjoy on a Pitcher Inn getaway courtesy of Mad River Taste Week. It’s a foodie’s bonanza that kicks off in pretty spectacular style with a come-one-, come-all pig roast on the heels of the Waitsfield Farmers market on Saturday, August 4th.
The week following will come stacked with tours and tastings, and finish off with the 10th Annual Vermont Cheesemakers Festival at Shelburne Farms: a Lake Champlain-side celebration of Vermont’s happy status as the state with the most cheesemakers per capita in the country.
