A Tale of Two Mountains: Sugarbush & Mad River Glen

As a guest at the Pitcher Inn, you’ve got the best of New England at your fingertips: a charming small town (complete with a covered bridge!), heavyweight hospitality, fantastic local cuisine and craft beer, and access to some fabulous Green Mountain scenery and adventure.

Two of New England’s most highly regarded ski resorts lie in our gorgeous mountain hinterland: Sugarbush and Mad River Glen. You’re spoiled for choices, in other words, and we recommend visiting both of them, as each has its unique draw and atmosphere.

Mad River Glen

Established in 1948 (and made the first cooperatively owned ski area in the country in 1995), Mad River Glen also stands apart as one of the rare ski-only resorts remaining in North America—one of only three, to be exact—and one of the few to still operate a single chairlift. Doused in some 250 inches of the white stuff each year, the ski area—listed on the National Register of Historic Places—boasts about 2,000 feet of vertical and some of the most varied and challenging terrain in New England.

Sugarbush

Not far south (and basically in our backyard), analogously snow-socked Sugarbush claims more than 4,000 acres, 16 lifts, and a vertical drop of 2,600 feet on terrain that encompass two Green Mountain summits: Lincoln Peak and Mount Ellen. Along with the more developed runs and a trio of terrain parks, the resort offers access to backcountry skiing and snowboarding in the wild and wonderful Slide Brook Basin.

“Ski For Free” at the Pitcher Inn

Here at the Pitcher Inn, we give you front-row seats to the mountaintop charms of Mad River Glen and Sugarbush, but the advantages go beyond convenient proximity. Our “Ski For Free” packages, available through April 18th, combine accommodations in our Mountain, Lodge, Trout, or (naturally) Ski rooms with passes to Sugarbush, either:

  1. two midweek nights and a pair of one-day Sugarbush ski passes, or
  2. three weekend nights and four one-day Sugarbush ski passes.

Both the midweek and weekend versions of “Ski For Free” also include Continental breakfast, as you’ll naturally want the proper fueling-up ahead of a day up on the Sugarbush slopes.

And listen: If you already have a season pass to the resort, you can swap out the ski passes for two (midweek) or four (weekend) in-room massages as part of the “Ski For Free” deal.
